Hello, and welcome to our meditation practice today. Let's begin by finding a comfortable seated position, either on a cushion or a chair. Allow your spine to be straight but not rigid, and let your hands rest gently on your thighs or in your lap.
As you settle into your posture, let your eyes gently close, and take a moment to arrive fully in this space, in this moment. To support this arrival, let's take three slow, deep breaths together. Breathing in deeply through the nose, and exhaling slowly through the mouth. Again, breathing in... and out. One more time, inhaling deeply... and exhaling completely.
Now, let the breath return to its natural rhythm, without trying to control it. Simply observe the breath as it flows in and out, noticing the gentle rise and fall of your chest and belly.
As you continue to breathe naturally, begin to expand your awareness to the sensations in your body. Notice any areas of comfort or ease, however subtle they may be. Perhaps it's a sense of warmth, or the soft touch of your clothing against your skin. Maybe it's the absence of discomfort or pain in certain areas. Whatever sensations of ease or well-being you discover, just allow yourself to appreciate and savor them.
Now, gently extend your awareness to your surroundings. Open up to any pleasant sights, sounds, or smells that may be present. Maybe it's the soft light filtering through your eyelids, or the distant chirping of birds outside. Perhaps it's the aroma of fresh coffee or the fragrant scent of blooming flowers carried in on a breeze.
As you engage your senses in this way, see if you can cultivate a sense of gratitude for these simple, often overlooked pleasures. Recognize that in this very moment, there is beauty and goodness to be found, even amidst life's challenges and difficulties.
If your mind wanders into thoughts of the past or future, or gets caught up in worries or judgments, simply acknowledge this without criticism, and gently guide your attention back to the present moment, back to the breath and the body.
Continue to rest in this state of open, appreciative awareness for a few more moments, silently savoring all that is pleasant and nourishing in your experience.
As we prepare to end this practice, take a final deep breath in, and a slow breath out. Gently wiggle your fingers and toes, and when you feel ready, slowly open your eyes.
Take a moment to notice how you feel after this practice. See if you can carry this sense of presence and gratitude with you as you move through the rest of your day, remembering that there is always something to appreciate, even in the most ordinary moments.
